Reason No. 36 to Love California: Gay Marriage

No it's not the avocados; fresh sushi-grade fish; year-round hiking, surfing or biking; the abundance of hybrid cars; Half Dome; Coachella; Tahoe; Golden Gate Bridge; Hollywood or Hwy 1 (but these all pretty much kick ass). It's the fact that the California Supreme Court believes in the rights of all people. California's high court today overturned a ruling saying that it's unconstitutional to deny gay couples the right to marry. They likened it to not allowing interracial couples to marry.

The justices, in a 4-3 ruling, wrote, "In view of the substance and significance of the fundamental constitutional right to form a family relationship, the California Constitution properly must be interpreted to guarantee this basic civil right to all Californians, whether gay or heterosexual, and to same-sex couples as well as to opposite-sex couples."

This is a huge day for our country. Massachusetts made same-sex marriage legal four years ago at the same time that San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom started issuing marriage licenses to gay couples. All the marriages granted during that period had been nullified, but will now be reinstated. Today Newsom said, "It's a throwaway line, but I think it's true: As California goes, so goes the rest of the nation."

So Mayor Daley -- when are you going to start issuing same-sex marriage licenses in the city? Let's make this happen! -- Ari

If you are not too busy trying to get the armored car open with a baseball bat...

Check out this flickr page of NYC vs. Liberty City (Grand Theft Auto 4). It's pretty amazing. Next being able to run over pregnant ladies and not being shamed for it. -Lizelle

VON BONDIES @ SUBTERRANEAN 5/15

Where have the pouty garage-rock quartet the Von Bondies been since the release of their catchy, peer pressure-tinged single "C'Mon, C'Mon?" The embarrassing answer is in my head every time I took a shower this past month. Fortunately for fans of the sex and angst-filled rock tornado (and especially my roommates), the Bondies move from my cranium to Subterranean for an all-ages show with DIE! DIE! DIE! and My Were They. The Detroit-based band are promoting their third to-be-released studio album "Love, Hate And Then There's You." But if you're aching for new material now, check out their self-released Myspace.com EP "We Are Kamikazes," which will probably make a better bang than brawling with Jack White.

Doors: 6:30 p.m./ Show: 7 p.m.

Save Live Music in Chicago

The Chicago city council will vote on Wednesday on the "Event Promoters" ordinance which, if passed, will force small promoters of live music, theater and cultural events to pay an absurd fee to obtain a license to put on their shows. Please sign the following petition and then call your alderman and tell them to vote no. Do it for the music, man.

*Spoiler Warning*

With three episodes left in the season, LOST this week, wasted little time in driving up the dramatic tension and suspense the series is known for. Some secondary characters died, a main character refused-to-be-shot, and some long lost dads, turned out to be not so dead.

You know, LOST stuff.

Apparently Locke and Richard go way, way back. Claire is OK and having fun hanging out with her dad, who might just be a stand-in for Jacob. Michael cannot be killed, though not for lack of trying, and Keamy is potentially the best bad guy you-love-to-hate ever.

LOST continues to build towards what will no doubt be an epic season finale, though it stands to be seen as to whether or not they can top last years mind-shattering conclusion involving the future. (I’m hoping they work in ghosts so Miles can get more screen time and just because I love ghosts.)

The only thing I can say this episode suffered from was a lack of Daniel Faraday and not-enough Desmond. We can always use more Desmond and Faraday. Always. And what’s up with killing off the secondary characters with such relentless speed? By my count they’ve killed off enough people to fill a second plane and start the show all-over again.

Oh yeah, Locke has to find a way to move the island.

Dun dun duhhhhh!
