I hear things about filmmaker Béla Tarr's long takes and methodical pacing, but what I see in Tarr's The Man from London is a lot of style signifying nothing. It's a variation on film noir with a railroad switchman witnessing a murder and finding a briefcase full of money. Tarr tells the story in takes that go on for several minutes and with dialogue so full of pregnant pauses it makes Pinter sound like Mamet. The acting consists of people staring blankly into space (People only do that if catatonic or stuck in an "art" film), and sometimes the extended looks at the bow of a ship or a wooden door are more interesting than watching the actors.
