Catch it.
Get ready for a time warp when you listen to Dengue Fever. Listening to Chhom Nimol’s hypnotic vocals on Venus on Earth transports you to Cambodia in the 1960s. Blending twangy surf rock and brass swing, Dengue Fever will get you dancing with otherworldly instrumental tracks like “Oceans of Venus” but also captivate you with Bond theme-esque numbers like “Sober Driver.” Analogue tape helped preserve the full, rich sound of the rhythm section and minor key melodies provide a deep and swanky sound. Stand-out track “Tiger Phone Card” is a duet between Zac Holtzman and Nimol that paints a picture of long-distance lovers: “I’m thirty thousand feet high / Flying through the dead of night / I took an Ambien, and you came drifting through my dreams.” The cross between lounge lizards and Cambodian pop enables the band to transcend the genre of word music and makes Dengue Fever something I want to catch. Which I can do -- and you, too! -- tomorrow night when they're at the Empty Bottle. - Sara
